2011: GRAY IS THE NEW NEUTRAL

The color mafia has spoken and gray is the hottest neutral color for 2011! Don't be fooled by this seemingly simple color. Picking the right gray is more complex than you might think. Our recent trip to the paint aisle at our local Home Depot proves this. There are more tones of gray than you can imagine, and the reflective light in your home will change the hue of each color. Before you buy an entire gallon, I suggest you pick up a sample of your faves ($2.99 vs. $33 for a gallon). Paint some sample boards, I use heavy white cardboard, this way you don't muck up your walls and you can carry the boards to other rooms. Remember that it always dries a hint darker; good luck!

Home For The Holidays: Update Your Theme

Getting ready to deck the halls with the same old balls? Try something new this year. Pick one color in your house, or out of your exisitng decorations and build on that as your "theme color". Hopefully, your home's walls and flooring lend itself to a variety of colors and patterns.

Color blocked? Pick a favorite thing or object. For example, birds and decorate your home using that theme as a your inspiration, but staying within the color palette that fits your existing surroundings.

I like to pick unexpected themes. One year we chose orange, and last year we did peacocks.

Wall Street Sees Green

Green Products

-- Interior Design, 6/1/2009 12:00:00 AM

The Dow Jones Industrial Average may still be shaky, but one thing is concretely on the rise: eco-conscious design. A glimpse into the practices of the 2009 top 100 Interior Design Giants reveals all. The number of LEED-accredited professionals on staff has doubled since last year, while the amount of green products specified has also grown, with carpet leading the way. The greenest client sector? You guessed it: government. Thank you, Mr. President.
